Combined with an amp-like resonance control, the new SCOD is back with a vengeance. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of our original “non-foundational” overdrive from Catalinbread’s early days, a balls-out, juicy dirt circuit with a unique circuit topology, even now! The SCOD was initially designed around a “mystery IC,” back when you could get away with that kind of thing. But now that players demand a little more from their pedal lore, the SCOD is equipped with eight MOSFET devices, all stacked into one another and optimally tuned for a truly inspiring bottom-heavy crunch. Fans of Catalinbread from the early days might remember the SCOD as a three-knob device, but we’ve found that the addition of a tilt equalizer dramatically expands the tonal palette of the original. And since the Contour knob functions as a addition-by-subtraction mids control, the range of the pedal has opened up immensely. One such function is that of a switch. When voltage is applied to the base pin of a transistor, it “opens” the switch, i.e. connects the other two pins together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis is how Boss and Ibanez’s bypass switching works, in a nutshell. But what if a pedal’s input signal was connected to a transistor’s collector, and the transistor emitter was connected to ground? When voltage is applied to the transistor base, the signal gets dumped to ground. When the voltage is cut, the signal passes through. Now, what if you could find a way to send a rhythmic positive voltage to that transistor base? It would rhythmically modulate the signal. Uh-oh, this sounds like tremolo!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOf course, there are many ways to achieve this effect, but this is one best suited to DIY. Recorded on Valentine’s Day in 1970, it featured custom modified amplifiers built by Dave Reeves for Hiwatt, a model CP103 with a modified tone circuit. Our simulation of this sound is called the WIIO and our reissue gets even closer to that coveted tone. Hiwatts characteristically only break up when hit with other pedals or when absolutely dimed, and so the WIIO follows in turn, with a wide-ranging Gain control that reacts just like that of the CP103—clean until it isn’t. The powerful Baxandall-style EQ works just like the tone controls in Pete’s amp, providing gobs of interactivity and harmonious overlap without the massive volume loss of many passive designs. Guitars and vocals on Live at Leeds were fed through a tape echo that was connected to the mixer’s auxiliary bus, which you can hear all over the record. We have added this to the circuit, giving you the ability to blend in a tape echo preamp after the main circuit. Three knobs control the mixer section, giving you one octave down, two octaves down, and a dry, boosted distortion. The Dry knob gives you a really great light distortion sound that’s more than capable of pushing your amp into overdrive, but the fun starts when you control the levels of octave down signals with their accompanying low-pass filters. With no filtering, the octaves are harmonically rich square waves that sound like old-school Nintendo, but turning up their accompanying filter knobs smooth out the harmonics and turn into clean octaves down.
