Part of its magic, and how it differs from the internal spring reverb found in most Fender-style amps, is that it is run *in front* of the amp, causing the reverb signal to distort and sound more intense. Because there were additional knobs on the outboard units, you also have more control over the reverb qualities. The Dwell knob controlled how hard the springs were getting hit by the guitar signal. The Tone knob allowed the treble to be dialed back to just the right degree of brightness. It was also essentially a tube preamp, so it would color the sound going into the amp. All this added up to a very distinctive reverb sound with a lot of attitude and complex non-linearities that are hard to replicate. But we here at Catalinbread did just that! Of the two, the germanium version is by far the most rare, with original designer and Mosrite employee Ed Sanner estimating that around 250 ever made it out the door. In that final year of production, Mosrite shifted exclusively to silicon parts, making germanium components a thing of the past. However, by 1968 the public was hungry for fuzz, having heard it on a handful of recordings, most notably "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly and "Incense and Peppermints" by Strawberry Alarm Clock. These two buzzy, sinewy fuzz tones were part of a wave of psychedelic rock gaining traction in the mainstream, and both were recorded prior to the introduction of the silicon Fuzzrite. Other purported users of this early Fuzzrite circuit include Ron Asheton of the Stooges, Norman Greenbaum on "Spirit in the Sky", Henry Vestine of Canned Heat, and many others. We at Catalinbread happen to have a germanium version at our disposal, and we've used it as a benchmark to create an extremely faithful version with a modern twist. And staying true to that, our original Epoch Boost was billed as something of a “mastering tool”, the finishing touch for your tone. And while you are certainly free to place it anywhere you like, almost everyone, including the pros, preferred it at the end of the chain as an “always on” to tighten up the entire mix while adding some extra sparkle on top. It just made everything sound “good.” When it came time to head back to the drawing board, we thought of a couple extra variables you could use to craft your perfect EP-3 experience. We added a Bias control which gives you a little more gain and body from the stock circuit by simulating out-of-spec parts in the preamp core, so that every pedal is “one of the good ones.” We played with the “early” and “later” circuits and found the differences to be a bit too subtle, so we decided to add a well-curated filter knob to take you from early to later and beyond, a tasteful hi-cut that lets you adapt the pedal to your rig, not the other way around. The Preamp control lets you engage a gentle filtering circuit that simulates the Volume control from the original Echoplex, acting on the tone as the echo would have. The stock EP-3 circuit adds only a trivial amount of gain by itself, so we’ve included a Boost knob to wring as much gain from it as possible, giving you a real punch where you need it. The Muff for people that don’t like Muffs, the Giygas features a highly modified fuzz engine that does the Muff thing without any of the bad stuff. Do you want volume-knob cleanup? Kay-O. The Giygas does that. Do you want a punchy tonal profile without the standard tone circuit messing everything up? Kay-O. The Giygas sculpts its tone with respect to the surrounding circuitry while avoiding the lossy dual-filter approach of the original. A wide-ranging fuzz knob gives you a load of character ranging from gritty boost to beautiful rounded square-wave singing fuzz with just one knob turn. Try one and you’ll agree, the Giygas is built outright for PSI Rockin’ and will live forever… on your pedalboard. Of this, we are irrefutably confident.

We’re thrilled to celebrate 10 amazing years of the Sabbra Cadabra! Really, when you think Black Sabbath you immediately think “Electric Guitar”. His early signature sound was the result of an always on treble-booster plugged into cranked Laney Supergroup amps. This approach to guitar is extremely rewarding and fun, but lost in this day and age because honestly who can really get away with the stage volume anymore? Far and few between! We designed the Sabbra Cadabra to give players that sonic experience, re-contextualized for today’s approach where players tend to use amps solely within their clean range at more mortal volume levels.

Greetings, tonal astrophysicists and laypersons alike, welcome to the Galileo 4K, a pedal that serves as the next chapter in our Galileo’s history. Our newest version keeps the Rangemaster-Vox pipeline intact but expands the last version’s equalization section into a two-band Baxandall EQ to surprising effect. Our last iteration of this circuit features a solitary EQ control called “Tone” that acts as a treble control while fixing the low end. We tried swapping out this arrangement for a standard AC30-style tone stack and the result sounded far beyond a simple tweak—our gain, your gain! Now with the additional tonal flexibility, you can dial in a far greater variety of Vox-like tones that really bloom when pushed by an iconic treble booster circuit. All that same Galileo punch and bite you’ve come to expect remains untouched, adding a little flexibility to what was once a rather rigid circuit.
