Our original DLS circuit has been tweaked and upgraded throughout, now featuring a phase inverter, power amp sim and output transformer as well as some new features and the most requested modifications for the original. One such addition is a toggle switch on the outside to select between Super Lead and Super Bass modes, and we’ve also externalized the Presence knob to easily dial in your preferred Marshall flavor. Also added is a piece of the Dirty Little Secret—a single preamp tube simulator—as a built-in boost circuit that can be used independently of the main circuit. You can run the boost and DLS in any order you like; put the boost before the DLS for a high-powered saturated tone or after to pummel the front end of your amp. A new tightness knob lets you shave off the sub-bass for a little extra clarity or completely attenuate the low end for some cool thrash metal tones. A Line Out jack gives you a dedicated +10dB output that you can use with a mixer or DAW, and you can use both outputs simultaneously. Between the Boost, order selector and the external Super Lead/Super Bass modes, the Dirty Little Secret Deluxe is engineered to be a total performance tool that does the line justice.

A long time ago, we released a savage, amp melting overdrive called the SuperCharged Overdrive. After letting this one hibernate a bit, it’s back but now it’s got some new tricks. The circuit has been retooled to provide a more dynamic gain range and a tilt equalizer that really lets the gain breathe. Combined with an amp-like resonance control, the new SCOD is back with a vengeance.

This is one of our original “non-foundational” overdrive from Catalinbread’s early days, a balls-out, juicy dirt circuit with a unique circuit topology, even now! The SCOD was initially designed around a “mystery IC,” back when you could get away with that kind of thing. But now that players demand a little more from their pedal lore, the SCOD is equipped with eight MOSFET devices, all stacked into one another and optimally tuned for a truly inspiring bottom-heavy crunch. Fans of Catalinbread from the early days might remember the SCOD as a three-knob device, but we’ve found that the addition of a tilt equalizer dramatically expands the tonal palette of the original. And since the Contour knob functions as a addition-by-subtraction mids control, the range of the pedal has opened up immensely. It’s a favorite around here and we think you will think so too.

One of our first “amp-in-a-box” foundation overdrives concerned that of the Who, and specifically the tone found on an album sometimes described as the pinnacle of live albums, Live at Leeds. Recorded on Valentine’s Day in 1970, it featured custom modified amplifiers built by Dave Reeves for Hiwatt, a model CP103 with a modified tone circuit. Our simulation of this sound is called the WIIO and our reissue gets even closer to that coveted tone. Hiwatts characteristically only break up when hit with other pedals or when absolutely dimed, and so the WIIO follows in turn, with a wide-ranging Gain control that reacts just like that of the CP103—clean until it isn’t. The powerful Baxandall-style EQ works just like the tone controls in Pete’s amp, providing gobs of interactivity and harmonious overlap without the massive volume loss of many passive designs. Guitars and vocals on Live at Leeds were fed through a tape echo that was connected to the mixer’s auxiliary bus, which you can hear all over the record. We have added this to the circuit, giving you the ability to blend in a tape echo preamp after the main circuit. This fattens up the signal and adds a sheen missing from the original, as well as plenty of extra volume.

Ardent effects nerds will remember the fur-lined Super Chili Picoso as the first Catalinbread effect, hand-made on a kitchen table in Washington and sold to Tone Factor, establishing us as a company. The VariOboost is one of our oldest pedals, with a lineage that nearly reaches the beginning of our timeline. The original delivered 12 decibels of boost or cut at a user-selectable frequency from 70Hz to 1.4KHz, with some additional gain piled on top for a truly stellar boosting experience. This device was loved by players of all stripes, from jazz players looking to tame highs in a surgical way to death metal guys looking to annihilate the midrange without sacrificing volume. We’ve captured the spirit of the original, with an additional control we call Pre. This new control introduces a clipping circuit before the frequency boost with plenty of gain of its own. Together with the Post knob, you can dial in everything from ultra-clean boost by cranking Post and rolling back Pre, to a very convincing overdrive by turning the knobs the opposite way. You can also give a stubborn amp a shove into the red by running both knobs at whichever level you like. Whether you’re a clean or dirty boost person, we’ve got you covered. As celebrated as the circuit is, it has hundreds of variants, with even small value adjustments making big differences in tone and feel. And for being a fuzz unit, it’s much more topologically complicated than others in its category. Our Manx Loaghtan is a forgotten classic that’s on many of our own pedalboards, which got us wondering why we ever stopped making it. It’s a sterling example of the classic Muff circuit, featuring a much more powerful EQ section—often cited as the weakest link of the Muff. Ours scraps the single-knob dual filter approach in favor of a much more robust Baxandall type, which lets you dial in every flavor of equalization from crisp highs to boomy lows, but further exploration lets you adjust the midrange content by boosting or cutting both bands at once. The surrounding circuitry has been expertly tweaked to serve up chunky chords, woodwind-like sustain and even some low-gain OD tones.

The first device in the storied Tweed lineup at Catalinbread HQ, the Formula 5 was designed to emulate those reedy, touch-sensitive ‘50s tones of yore without too much fuss. Topologically similar to the newer Formula 55 but with a much different gain structure, we decided that more people should experience the magic and simplicity of this old device. The Formula 5 is designed with circuits formulated to simulate real tubes, the Formula 5 serves up a healthy dose of gain right up front that interacts wonderfully with your guitar’s controls, harkening back to a time when other pedals just didn’t exist—one player, one guitar, one amp. And just like the old school tweed machines, all controls are interactive on this badboy, with Tone tied directly to Gain to emphasize certain frequencies depending on where both are set. This makes multiple “sweet spots” available across both knobs that are infinitely tailorable to any amp-and-guitar setup you can throw at it. What evolved from that was a circuit that shared DNA with the Mosrite Fuzzrite and the Jordan Bosstone but was markedly different from both. The Merkin borrowed the gain-stage mixing element from the Fuzzrite and the raw fuzz power of the Bosstone’s plug-in unit to create something new with a distinct classic flavor.

Many fuzzes that employ a blendable gain approach employ two identical stages and normally take the output from the mixer.
